The registry edit wasn't successful because the problem is that you don't have a driver for your network adapters. That depends on whether you have a legitimate Microsoft product key for whatever edition of Windows XP is installed.

For your immediate problem, you need to get drivers from the Lenovo web site. You can do this using the computer that you're using to post questions here; just download the necessary drivers, copy them to a USB flash drive, and then bring the flash drive to the laptop to do the installation.

You would be better served, however, by determining the machine type and model from the label on the bottom of the Thinkpad. I can't tell you what drivers may or may not have been installed by whoever installed XP in your machine. In general, you need to install at least the following drivers, usually in the following order:

The Lenovo download page includes ReadMe files for most, if not all, of the downloads. Read these files to help determine if you need to install a particular driver or software package. I suggest that you not install any firmware upgrades or patches until you get everything working properly.

If you are going to connect this laptop to the Internet -- and you should seriously consider NOT doing that because of the increasing vulnerability to malware of Windows XP -- after you get the network driver installed, you need to (a) install a good antivirus that will still work with Windows XP (I haven't kept track of which ones still do) and (b) install Windows XP Service Pack 3 and all subsequent critical Windows updates. All of the Windows XP updates released prior to April 8, 2014, are available through Windows Update -- once service pack 3 has been installed (Windows Update will not work for XP pre-sp3).
