Looks like VMware Workstation got to version 14, and starting with this version we get a new neat feature, and that’s support for the VMware vCenter Server Appliance (VCSA).Previous to this, if we wanted to run VCSA in VMware Workstation we had to import the appliance from the.OVA template, then edit the virtual machine.VMX configuration file in order to make it work. VMware Workstation Pro works by creating fully isolated, secure virtual machines that encapsulate an operating system and its applications. The VMware virtualization layer maps the physical hardware resources to the virtual machine's resources, so each virtual machine has its own CPU, memory, disks, and I/O devices, and is the full equivalent of a standard x86 machine.
VMware Workstation Player, formerly VMware Player, is a virtualization software package for x64 computers running Microsoft Windows or Linux, supplied free of charge by VMware, Inc.,[4] a company which was formerly a division of, and whose majority shareholder remains EMC Corporation. VMware Player can run existing virtual appliances and create its own virtual machines (which require an operating system to be installed to be functional). It uses the same virtualization core as VMware Workstation, a similar program with more features, which is not free of charge. VMware Player is available for personal non-commercial use,[5] or for distribution or other use by written agreement.[6] VMware, Inc. does not formally support Player, but there is an active community website for discussing and resolving issues,[7] and a knowledge base.[8]
In summary, VMware appliances are FREE, already configured virtual servers that you can download FREE from the Internet. You can run them on your Windows XP/2003 or Linux VMware computer. A virtual appliance is a prebuilt, preconfigured, and ready-to-run software application that is packaged with the operating system in a virtual machine. VMware Docs MyLibrary. I also won’t go into installing VMware Workstation, because it is very straight-forward and just click NEXT, NEXT, NEXT until it is complete. Obviously, install VMware Workstation on the machine where you plan to run the vCenter 6.5 Appliance and make sure it has at least 16GB RAM; because you will need at least 8GB for the Appliance itself.
The free VMware Player was distinct from VMware Workstation until Player v7, Workstation v11. In 2015 the two packages were combined as VMware Workstation 12, with a free for non-commercial use Player version which, on purchase of a license code, became the higher-specification VMware Workstation Pro.[9][10]
Sometimes you can restart program but sometimes you have to restart windows. Encore has very nice user interface, can do almost anything but has a lots of bugs. If you work on one DVD and then load project for second it will get stuck. Audio can disappear without reason and 'Media Cache' files which are used to sync audio can be 2/3 of original MPG file that will be transferred to DVD without re-encoding.If you are a masochist, this is a must use. I have created around 20 DVDs with custom menus and playing options.
Features[edit]
VMware claimed in 2011 that the Player offered better graphics, faster performance, and tighter integration for running Windows XP under Windows Vista or Windows 7 than Microsoft's Windows XP Mode running on Windows Virtual PC, which is free of charge for all purposes.[4]
Versions earlier than 3 of VMware Player were unable to create virtual machines (VMs), which had to be created by an application with the capability, or created manually by statements stored in a text file with extension '.vmx'; later versions can create VMs. The features of Workstation not available in Player are 'developer-centric features such as Teams, multiple Snapshots and Clones, and Virtual Rights Management features for end-point security',[11] and support by VMware. Player allows a complete virtual machine to be copied at any time by copying a directory; while not a fully featured snapshot facility, this allows a copy of a machine in a particular state to be stored, and reverted to later if desired. By default changes (including proxy settings, passwords, bookmarks, installed software and malware) made in a VM are saved when it is shut down, but the .vmx configuration file can easily be edited to autorevert on shutdown, so that all changes are discarded.[12]
VMware Player is also supplied with the VMware Workstation distribution, for use in installations where not all client users are licensed to use the full VMware Workstation. In an environment where some machines without VMware Workstation licences run VMware Player, a virtual machine created by Workstation can be distributed to computers running Player without paying for additional Workstation licenses if not used commercially.[13]

Resources[edit]
Many ready-made virtual machines (VMs) which run on VMware Player, Workstation, and other virtualization software are available[28][29][30][31] for specific purposes, either for purchase or free of charge. For example, a free Linux-based “browser appliance” with the Firefox browser installed[32] is available that can be used for safe Web browsing; if infected or damaged, it can be discarded and replaced by a clean copy. VMs can be configured to reset after each use without the need to recreate from the original file. Suppliers of operating systems with commercial licences usually require installations to be licensed; VMs with such operating systems installed cannot be distributed without restriction. Ready-to-use VMs with Microsoft or Apple operating systems installed, in particular, are not distributed, except for evaluation versions.
VMware Player supports free-of-charge VMware Tools, which add significant functionality. Versions of Player for different platforms have their own Tools, not necessarily compatible with other versions. Sometimes Tools are updated belatedly; for example, Player 4.0.2 was released on 24 January 2012, but the corresponding version of Tools was not available for some time after that, restricting functionality of updated Player installations.[7]
Virtual machines created by any VMware software can be used by any other. It is often possible to use VMs created by one manufacturer's virtual machine software with software from another manufacturer, either directly or via a conversion procedure. VMs that run on Microsoft Virtual Server and Virtual PC can be converted for use by VMware software by the VMware vCenter Converter. This software can also create a virtual machine from a physical PC.[33]

VMware Workstation is a hosted hypervisor that runs on x64 versions of Windows and Linux operating systems[4] (an x86 version of earlier releases was available);[3] it enables users to set up virtual machines (VMs) on a single physical machine, and use them simultaneously along with the actual machine. Each virtual machine can execute its own operating system, including versions of Microsoft Windows, Linux, BSD, and MS-DOS. VMware Workstation is developed and sold by VMware, Inc., a division of Dell Technologies. There is a free-of-charge version, VMware Workstation Player, for non-commercial use. An operating systems license is needed to use proprietary ones such as Windows. Ready-made Linux VMs set up for different purposes are available from several sources.
VMware Workstation supports bridging existing host network adapters and sharing physical disk drives and USB devices with a virtual machine. It can simulate disk drives; an ISO image file can be mounted as a virtual optical disc drive, and virtual hard disk drives are implemented as .vmdk files.
VMware Workstation Pro can save the state of a virtual machine (a 'snapshot') at any instant. These snapshots can later be restored, effectively returning the virtual machine to the saved state,[5] as it was and free from any post-snapshot damage to the VM.
VMware Workstation includes the ability to group multiple virtual machines in an inventory folder. The machines in such a folder can then be powered on and powered off as a single object, useful for testing complex client-server environments.

2016 company changes and future development[edit]
VMware Workstation versions 12.0.0, 12.0.1, and 12.1.0 were released at intervals of about two months in 2015.[6] In January 2016 the entire development team behind VMware Workstation and Fusion was disbanded and all US developers were immediately fired.[7][8][9][10] The company said that 'the restructuring activities will not impact the existence of any current product lines', that 'roles and responsibilities associated with particular businesses will be moved to other regions and office locations', and that investment would continue 'with emphasis on our growth products'. The future of Workstation and Fusion became uncertain. On 24 April 2016 maintenance release 12.1.1 was released. In September, same year, the company announced that 'we’re very much alive and well'[11]. Consequently, on September 13 Workstation 12.5 and Fusion 8.5 were released as free upgrades which added support for Windows 10 Anniversary edition and Windows Server 2016.

Variants[edit]
There was a free VMware Player distinct from Workstation, with similar but reduced functionality, until VMware Player v7, Workstation v11. In 2015 the two packages were combined as VMware Workstation 12, with a free VMware Workstation Player version which, on purchase of a license code, became the higher specification VMware Workstation Pro.[61] VMware Workstation Player, like VMware Player[62] before it, is free of charge for non-commercial use, or for distribution or other use by written agreement.[6][63] (Workstation Pro is also available for download for a free trial period, and is easily confused with the unlimited-time restricted-functionality version.)
- VMware Workstation Player (formerly known as Player Pro),[64] free for non-commercial use; a licence may be purchased for commercial use, also providing eligibility for paid support.[65]
- VMware Workstation Pro,[66] available for a 30-day free trial before purchase but distinct from the permanently free version.
The features of the versions are compared on the VMware web site.[65]
VMware Tools[edit]
VMware Tools, a package with drivers and other software available for the various guest operating systems VMware products support, installs in guest operating systems to add functionality. Tools is updated from time to time, with v10.1.15 in September 2017.[67] It has several components, including the following:
- Drivers for emulated hardware:
- VESA-compliant graphics for the guest machine to access high screen resolutions
- Network drivers for the vmxnet2 and vmxnet3 NIC
- Ensoniq AudioPCI audio
- Mouse integration
- Support of shared folders and drag-and-drop file transfer between host and guest. This functionality is described as HGFS (Host Guest File System), and may be disabled by default for security; it may be enabled by changes to the .VMX configuration file
- Clipboard sharing between host and guest
- Time-synchronization capabilities (guest synchronises with host machine's clock)
- Support for Unity, a feature that allows seamless integration of applications with the host desktop[68] by hiding virtual monitor and drawing the windows of applications running in the virtual machine on the host. Unity support was added for Windows 10 and removed for Linux in Workstation 12.[26]

Ready-to-use virtual machines[edit]
Vmware Workstation Forum
Many ready-made virtual machines (VMs) which run on VMware Player, Workstation, and other virtualization software are available[69] for specific purposes, either for purchase or free of charge; for example free Linux-based 'browser appliances' with the Firefox or other browser installed[70][71] which can be used for safe Web browsing; if infected or damaged it can be discarded and replaced by a clean copy. The appliance can be configured to automatically reset itself after each use so personal information and other changes are not stored.[71] VMs distributed legally only have freely distributable operating systems, as operating systems on VMs must be licensed; ready-to-use Microsoft Windows VMs, in particular, are not distributed, except for evaluation versions.
Other tools[edit]
- PowerWF[72] - Provides a visual representation of VMware VIX scripts, converting them into workflows, or converting workflows into Powershell cmdlets and modules. VIX is VMware's addition to Microsoft's Powershell for automation of the VMware Player.
